Golf

Golf

Tee off to the sound of crashing waves pounding granite cliffs and rocks, or amid the tranquillity of lush Cornish countryside. Established in 1891, Bude & North Cornwall Golf Club is a challenging links course, surrounded by town and sea.

Roserrow near the Camel Estuary, a 400 acre site set among beautiful rolling hills and valleys, will suit all abilities; St. Enodoc has a great location on sand dunes with two courses – a challenging James Braid championship course and the shorter and easier Hollywell; St. Kew Golf Club is a flattish parkland circuit with 9 holes and 18 different tees to challenge both experienced and novice players; Trevose Golf Club offers an 18-hole championship course and two nine-hole courses, while Lanhydrock, a parkland course with easy walking and many natural water features, is said to be “forgiving”. The county has 35 golf courses, but you can also find pitch & putt and crazy golf.

Water sport

Water Sports

Surfing is no longer the preserve of the young and hip or weathered veteran. The variety of beaches and surf means there’s a wave to suit all ages and levels. Rocks, cliffs and pounding surf… fantastic! If you prefer to spectate from the security of a sunbed, however, then North Cornwall is where you’ll see some of the world’s top surfers ride the waves.

Boards and wetsuits can be hired, with half or full-day tuition available for novices. Look out too for kayak-surfing, windsurfing and kite-surfing. Head to Polzeath, Bude, Widemouth, Constantine, Harlyn and Watergate bays and get busy conquering those Atlantic rollers.

Alternatively, take out a dinghy, canoe, or sailboard on the Camel estuary, or try your hand at parascending or water-skiing. Sheltered sailing and windsurfing can be found at the Tamar Lakes, or you can enjoy a spot of rowing on the Bude Canal.

Fishing

Fishing

Gone fishin’ instead of just a wishin’? You certainly will if you are a keen angler because there’s sea, rock, beach, river, lake, coarse and fly-fishing to reel you in. Cornwall’s imposing granite cliffs, rocky shores, small sandy coves, and also its large number of lakes, rivers and streams, add up to a fisherman’s – or fisherwoman’s – dream holiday spot. And there’s a wide variety of fish in and around Cornish waters. To cast your rod at the best sites take a chartered boat, found in most ports. You won’t have to go far either to find a tackle shop with an assistant ready to advise you.

Riding

Walking, Riding or Cycling

By pedal or horse power, or wearing your walking boots, the landscape is never anything but glorious and the trails, with spectacular coastal and country views, are a popular way to see North Cornwall. If you imagine yourself striding out on windswept Bodmin Moor, galloping on horseback across golden sand beaches, pedalling the 18-mile Camel Trail, from Padstow to Wemford Bridge, or exploring the North Cornwall section of The Cornish Way, you can do it. There are many easier strolls too! And those who ‘collect’ churches might follow the Church Trail – as did the poet John Betjeman. Bicycles can be hired in Wadebridge. Leaflets and packs are available from tourist information centres, including town and village trails, coastal walks with breathtaking vistas, and The Saints’ Way – the Padstow to Fowey stretch of the route taken by Christian pilgrims on their way to Brittany from Ireland.
